The Performance Character pillar is the foundation of school culture at Athlos Academy of Utah. We integrate the development of Performance Character into every learning opportunity, allowing students to experience this connection first hand. Traits like grit, curiosity, social intelligence, and integrity become a lens through which students view their learning as about more than grades, but as learning for life.
Providing a high-quality Performance Character program is as important to Athlos as providing a high-quality mathematics, or literacy program. In fact, research indicates that the development of Performance Character traits such as optimism, and courage may be more closely linked to a student’s long-term success in college and career than GPA.
The Performance Character curriculum helps students feel more connected to their peers and teachers and to the school community, as a whole. This leads to greater levels of engagement and motivation. Athlos Academy of Utah students are well equipped to overcome obstacles in a relentless pursuit of success and turn moments of failure into learning opportunities from which they grow.
Athlos performance attributes are especially integral to turf activities where coaches and teachers relate them to student progress and goals. Performance Character huddles regularly bring a class together to discuss and be challenged by an idea related to a Performance Character trait. To complement this exercise, reflections allow students to “teach the concept back.”
By understanding what Performance Character traits are and why they matter, Athlos students are able to define an abstract concept and relate it to their lives.
Along with an academic report card, students and families receive regular feedback on a student’s growth in each trait. This information serves as a community-wide opportunity to discuss a student’s success and challenges, to hold each other accountable, and to build strong and positive relationships as students develop these Performance Character traits.
We’ve put together some tips for parents to promote and model the 12 Performance Character traits at home.
